November was Assistive Technology Month!

Grand Opening – Assistive Technology Device Demonstration Center

The Assistive Technology Department of Three Rivers Center for Independent Living, in conjunction with Pennsylvania’s Initiative on Assistive Technology (PIAT) held the Grand Opening of its new Assistive Technology Device Demonstration Center.

The Grand Opening was held at the Three Rivers Center for Independent Living, at 900 Rebecca Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15221, on Tuesday, November 28 from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

Assistive technology (AT) is defined as any device which helps a person with a disability accomplish a task. AT can range in category from very low tech items such as a simple reacher, to very high tech equipment such as speech-generating communication devices and voice-activated environmental control systems.

The Demonstration Center will showcase many types of devices, and will be accessible to persons with disabilities, family members, care givers, and professionals.

For more information, contact Kevin Huwe, the Assistive Technology Program Manager at: 412-371-7700 extension 111.

PIAT is a program of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, Pennsylvania’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.           They are also looking for submissions such as letters, poems, personal accounts or reflections, articles, training manuals, research reports, policy analysis, and commentaries. They are looking for texts that have no commercial value (since they cannot pay for them), for which you own the copyright, and that are not likely to lose their relevance over the next few years. The themes they are interested in are Independent Living issues including personal assistance, accessibility, anti-discrimination legislation, advocacy, peer support, and everything that promotes the equalization of opportunities.
